BANE IGNACIO-SINGIAN (THEY/THEM) is an artist and filmmaker from Seattle, Washington. These are photos/art they have submitted to the collective.
“ FAVORITE aka ‘INRI’ encompasses the decision to hold on to trans identity even if it clashes with religious identity, that’s often correlated with cultural identity, as it is in the Philippines. It’s essentially binding all those identities together even if they aren’t in harmony. “
“ TRANS-05 aka ‘PANGARAP’ highlights naivety of acceptance ideals versus reality. Whether it’s being brown or gay or trans we all have a piece of us that hopes we’ll wake up accepted. “
‘YAYA’ and ‘NANAY’ are companion pieces - vignettes of Filipina womxn in my family who are the typical matriarchs in Filipino families. They both seem to be in control over their environment without even thinking about it. Filipinas are strong as hell."
“ ‘GROTTO’ is a snapshot of a grotto that my family always visits to pray. It’s in Portland and so many Filipinos go there all over the West Coast. I’ve always gone as a kid and it’s still followed me through life. “
“ ‘NO JOSÉ RIZAL’ is a collage portrait that bashes family expectations and societal expectations. I’m not gonna be compared to wanting to be Rizal or Shakespeare anymore, and I’m tired of other people’s persons and identity blurring over my own."
Bane also has a published piece on their diaspora experience which you can find here! Bane’s contact info:
