Born in Manila, Philippines, Isabel Angeles (she/they), also known as Isa, is a 21 year old Filipina writer/poet who now resides in California. She is also an intersectional feminist, activist, and performer. Isabel attempts to utilize the arts as a platform for her experiences as a Filipino in America, being an immigrant, her bisexuality, anti-colonialism/imperialism, and reclaiming identity. Her poetry also deals with other subjects such as addressing racism, empowerment, romance and more.
Isabel has always found healing in writing. From an early age, she realized how much it impacted people, leading her to pursue a career in the arts. She notes that artistic communities have never failed to welcome her with open arms. As someone who struggles with anxiety and depression, she credits art and writing as a few of the things that have truly saved her. She recognizes that this is the case for many others as well.
After not really seeing any Filipino/x-specific collectives, Isabel decided to take it upon herself and create one. She saw and experienced how such welcoming and wholesome art spaces helped people, and wanted to emulate it with The Walang Hiya Project. This is also her way of giving back to both communities she is part of: art/writing and Filipino/x communities. Her goal in creating The Walang Hiya Project is to bring Filipino/x women and non-binary Pinoys from all around the world, together. The Walang Hiya Project is ultimately an outlet for expression without shame.
Isabel hopes that the collective flourishes and grows bigger, connecting it to more people. She wants Filipino/x women and non-binary Pinoys to know that this safe space is here for them and that they are loved, seen, heard, and deserve recognition. The best part about running this collective is seeing others make connections, friends, and build a community.
