Anak na Amerikana (American Daughter) by Rialin José

Rialin José shares with us her film for her directing thesis, and what it means to her as a Filipina. Click the link below to watch her movie!

"Last year, I wrote/directed a short film called “Anak na Amerikana” (American Daughter) for my directing thesis. It’s based on a true story (as all projects for that class were), and it depicts my strained relationship with my dad. I didn’t realize how difficult it would be to make (technically and emotionally), and in addition to some post-production setbacks, it took at least a year for me to finally complete it. It was like revisiting but also unpacking some childhood trauma." Here is a synopsis: Lectured by her emotionally abusive father about her “American” attitude, Malaya is accused of not having any “utang na loob.” Their powerful exchange explores the harsh realities of an immigrant parent and their relationship with their American-born child.
